Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko held a meeting with arrested members of the opposition’s Coordination Council in the Belarus’ State Security Committee KGB detention centre in Minsk, on Saturday.
The discussion reportedly lasted more than four hours. According to local reports, the meeting was attended by former head of major Russia-owned bank, Belgazprombank, Viktor Babariko and his son Eduard, as well as arrested political strategist Vitaly Shklyarov and member of the Coordination Council Liliya Vlasova.
During talks, the incumbent president discussed with his opponents the constitutional reform, claiming that the Belarusian society "needs to start thinking beyond."
"We should not focus only on the constitution. As I understand, half the people present are lawyers. They are well aware that it is impossible to write the constitution on the streets," Lukashenko said.
Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election that saw incumbent President Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.
