Description

The Israeli army reported on Thursday that it was 'checking the possibility' that Yahya Sinwar, leader of the Hamas Political Bureau, had been killed in a strike.

Footage shows him at a number of different events over the past decade, including alongside the late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran in July.

Hamas had not commented on the reports of Sinwar's death at time of publication.

Sinwar - who Israel claims was the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks - replaced Haniyeh less than three months ago.

Born in 1962 in Khan Younis, he founded Hamas' security service Al-Majd in the 80s, and was given four life sentences by Israel in 1988. He was released in 2011 along with over a thousand others in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit,

The Israel-Hamas war has continued for over a year, starting with the militant group's unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing over 42,000 and injuring at least 99,000 according to the Palestinian side.
