He died following complications from surgery on his right shoulder at hospital in Zurich.
"He dedicated his life to work and to us," said one employee. "Fiat wouldn't be what it is now without him," added another.
Some paid tribute to his living legacy with one saying, "Fiat will find the way to keep going on."
Marchionne is credited with revolutionising Italian car manufacturer Fiat, reviving the company's fortunes and securing a merger with the US giant Chrysler in 2014.
Marchionne had stepped down from his post a year early on Saturday due to deteriorating health and was replaced by Mike Manley, head of the firm's Jeep brands.
