Description

Wuhan residents took to shops, restaurants and shopping streets to spend their New Year's Eve on Thursday, one year after the city became the ground zero of the coronavirus pandemic.

The city in which COVID-19 is believed to have originated is seeing something akin to a return to normal life as much of the rest of the world battles with lockdowns and high rates of infection.

Shops in the main shopping district of Han Street were open until midnight local time (16:00 GMT).

"I feel very happy. After the pandemic outbreak in January, I could not come to work for half a year. I had to stay at home for quite a long time. So I feel very happy to be able to work again," said sales assistant Nie Bei.

The city went into lockdown for 76 days beginning on January 23 this year in order to contain the virus. After the lockdown was lifted, local businesses slowly resumed in the later half of 2020. Rates of infection are remarkably low compared to Europe, which is fighting a new-found strain of the virus.
