Protesters gathered outside the UK Embassy in Tehran on Sunday, where they condemned Ambassador Rob Macaire's presence in the country and called for his expulsion, after he was accused of inciting protests and briefly arrested on Saturday when he attended a vigil for the victims of the Ukrainian plane crash.

"We are here to protest against the UK embassy for all the sedition that it carried out during all the years of revolution and now it must be expelled and people cannot take it anymore. We cannot tolerate their sedition anymore. We do not let anyone interfere in our country's issues," said a protester.

The vigil Macaire attended turned into an anti-government protest as demonstrators grew angry over the government's handling of the incident, although the diplomat had reportedly left the event by that point.

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called the arrest illegal saying Iran was risking to turn into a "pariah" state.

Ukrainian International Airlines (UIA) flight PS752 was shot down minutes after take-off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport on Wednesday, sparking a diplomatic spat as Western leaders blamed Iran for the incident, which the Iranian government at first denied. Tehran's handling of the incident has also sparked anti-government protests in Iran.
