Earlier in the day police had detained 430 people during anti-government rallies across the country, the Internal Affairs Ministry of Belarus reported. It also added that 385 of those detained had already been released.
Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election on Sunday, August 9, that saw incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term. On August 19 the European Union announced plans to enact sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
