Russian President Vladimir Putin named the European energy crisis a consequence of capitalism that, in his opinion, is no longer working, during a meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club, Thursday.
"What we are seeing now, let's say, in the energy markets. I think we will probably talk about it later. These are the manifestations of the capitalism that is not working," he stated, adding that the European Commission's economic policy is the reason for the current situation in the European energy market.
The Russian leader also commented on US President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.
"The US president did the right thing in withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. And he must have realised - maybe he didn't know in detail how it was going to happen - but he realised that it was going to be one of the lines of inner-political attack. But he went for it. He took the responsibility. We see the way it happened. It probably could have been done differently," Putin said.
In addition, the Russian head of state commented on the actions of the world community during the pandemic, the number of victims of which, according to Putin, exceeds the losses of the First World War.
"Even on humanitarian grounds - I am not referring now to sanctions against Russia - but sanctions are maintained against those states that are in dire need of international assistance. Nothing happens, everything remains the same. And where are the humanistic beginnings of Western political thought? In fact, there is nothing, just chatter, you see?" he added.
The 18th annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club ended in Sochi on Thursday.
