Thousands of southern Lebanon's residents fled to refugee centres in Beirut on Monday as Israeli airstrikes have intensified since early morning.

Footage shows displaced people arriving at a centre, unloading luggage from cars, and carrying their bags with personal belongings. The video also features Civil Defence workers distributing water bottles as well as members of the organising committees working with the refugees.

“In the early morning, our village was hit with nearly 30 airstrikes. I stayed in my village which is in the Tyre district. The shelling intensified inside the village after they used to bomb the surrounding areas. That was when I fled the village,” said Ibrahim Khalil, a displaced man from al-Malkiyeh village.

The Israeli army launched a series of deadly raids on southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, killing at least 356 people and injuring 1,246 others since Monday morning, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health at the time of publication.

Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said on Monday that the IDF had launched ‘a proactive offensive operation’ targeting what he described as ‘the combat infrastructure Hezbollah has been building for 20 years.’

“We are hitting the targets and preparing for the next stages, all focused on creating the conditions to return the residents of the north to their homes.”

For its part, Hezbollah announced that it had targeted with dozens of missiles the Northern Corps reserve headquarters, the Galilee Division reserve base and its logistics warehouses at Ami’ad base, Rafael's military-industrial complex in the Zovulun area north of Haifa, and the main warehouses of the Northern District at Nimra base.

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah have escalated over the past week following the mass explosions of pagers used by the militant group and the Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which killed the group’s senior commander Ibrahim Aqeel, and injured 60 others according to media reports. On Sunday morning, Hezbollah launched a rocket attack on areas near the northern Israeli city of Haifa, striking the city again on Monday.

The Israeli army has been exchanging cross-border shelling with Hezbollah, Lebanese and Palestinian factions since October 8, 2023, one day after the Israel-Hamas war broke out.
