Description

Emergency workers began searching for survivors after a landslide caused by heavy rains claimed at least 13 lives and damaged several residential properties in Karon, Phuket on Saturday.

"A big problem here. I [have been living here] for 30 years and this has never happened [before], this was the first time," one local said.

Footage shows excavators being used on site as rescuers searched for those missing. Locals can also be seen watching the cleanup efforts, walking outside damaged houses and collecting humanitarian assistance.

"Yesterday about 4 a.m. there was very heavy rain for about one hour which caused the landslide from the mountain ridge to slide down," explained a worker assisting in aid distribution.

He also revealed that some people are still missing, and locals are helping rescue agencies look for those affected by the landslide.

209 residential buildings have been damaged and at least 19 people have been injured in the landslide, according to local media.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat announced later on Saturday that the search operation has officially ended.

This comes as local authorities have declared nine villages as 'disaster zones' due to flooding from heavy rains.
