Description

The German Economy and Climate Minister said that Berlin is looking at alternative gas sources, amid concerns that Europe is too dependent on the Nord Stream 2 pipe from Russia.

Robert Habeck commented on the need for Germany to diversify its energy portfolio as the EU is "highly concerned" about the escalating situation of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border.

"There is the theoretical possibility of supplying from North Africa by pipeline, which is somewhat longer and France would have to allow us to build through France if that is not the case, we have to buy LNG [Liquefied natural gas]," he said on Wednesday.

Referring to Germany's reliance on Russian energy sources Habeck stated: "We need greater independence from one supplier, so we will have to diversify the gas market, diversify gas purchasing and create our information structures for this, and we will have to ensure that the storage options we have are better used than we have experienced this year.”

Habeck also stated that it is important for Germany to become more "independent" in terms of sourcing energy, amidst escalating tensions and fears that Russia will cut off its energy supply to mainland Europe in response to economic sanctions.

The US and the West have warned that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine amid a troop build-up on the regions around the Russia-Ukraine border. Moscow has repeatedly dismissed the accusations as "disinformation."
