Description

German Chancellor Angela Merkel made it clear that negotiations with the United Kingdom over Brexit will continue in the next few days during a press briefing in Brussels on Friday. Merkel believes it would be in the interest of both sides to reach an agreement, however the EU also has "to prepare for the alternative option."

The German Chancellor spoke about the multiannual financial framework (MMF) and the Recovery Fund, two issues that are profoundly interlinked, according to Merkel.

In addition, Merkel stressed the importance of COVID-19 common strategies and the importance of limiting contact and of contact tracing.

She said the EU member states "were in agreement that we need to bring figures down, infections and reduce contacts. In order to be able to trace contacts, we need to make sure that figures go down. There has not been a single country that is not willing to engage in contact tracing, to come clear with the pandemic."

With regard to the actions taken by Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean, the German Chancellor confirmed that EU leaders condemned those actions as "provocative" as they "have increased tensions instead of bringing them down."

Turkey, currently locked in a standoff over energy resources with Greece and Cyprus, will be subjected to close EU monitoring.
