Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted unanimously to extend the UN's mission mandate in Afghanistan for six months, during a meeting in New York City, on Friday.
Resolution 2596 aimed to stress the importance of a continued presence of UNAMA in Afghanistan, as well as of other UN-related agencies and programmes.
The draft resolution also called upon Afghan and international parties to ensure the safety and freedom of movement of Afghanistan-based UN staff, in coordination with UNAMA.
"With this, the council sends a unified message that we stand behind the UN's effort in Afghanistan going forward," stated Mona Juul, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Norway to the UN.
The resolution passed with 15 council member votes.
