Description

Locals in Nysa were seen constructing sandbag barriers to secure a broken embankment on Monday as central Europe grapples with severe flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains. The floods have resulted in at least 20 fatalities across the region.

Footage from Nysa shows emergency workers and vehicles on standby as rivers overflow and houses are submerged due to the relentless rainfall.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk held a disaster meeting in Wroclaw, noting that conflicting forecasts about floodwaters made it challenging to prepare adequately. "The predictions need to be analysed in detail," Tusk stated.

In response to the crisis, Poland has declared a state of natural disaster in the affected areas to facilitate emergency measures. Six people have died in flooding in Poland so far.

Neighbouring countries including Austria, Romania, Hungary, Germany, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic have also been hit hard by the storm. Reports indicate seven deaths in Romania, five in Austria, and three in the Czech Republic.

The flooding has triggered memories of the devastating 1997 floods, which resulted in 54 deaths and forced 162,000 people to evacuate in Poland and the Czech Republic.
