01:51Thirteen officers and 300 protesters have reportedly been wounded during the clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces near the al-Aqsa mosque on Temple Mount in East Jerusalem on Monday.
The clashes occurred ahead of the planned Israeli celebrations of Jerusalem Day in the old city. The celebrations mark the anniversary of the Israeli state capturing parts of the city in 1967.
Police entered the Temple Mount area on Monday morning after thousands of Palestinians had gathered in the compound overnight. Protesters hurled numerous rocks and other makeshift projectiles, while police fired back with explosives throughout the encounter.
Authorities decided to stop Jews from entering the holy site on Jerusalem Day due to rising tensions in the capital.
The clashes also follow rising tensions fuelled by the possible eviction of Palestinian families from Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.
