Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said that "dialogue is the only solution" to rising tensions in the region during a press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Sunday.

"This visit comes at a very critical time in the region, and we agreed with the brothers and with His Excellency the president that the only solution to these crises is de-escalation from everyone," Emir Tamim said.

Rouhani said "Due to the importance of regional security, especially the waterways in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Oman Sea, we decided to have more negotiations and consultations for the security of whole the region."

The visit of the Qatari Emir came amid heightened tensions in the region, following the US killing of top Iranian commander Qasem Solemiani and Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis near Baghdad's airport on January 3.
