Description

The local Mayor of flood-stricken Schuld, Helmut Lussi, fought back tears at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Adenau on Sunday.

Schuld in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the hardest areas hit by the floods in Germany.

"First of all, let me tell you that I am very glad, that in our community there are no dead, injured or missing people. For me that was the biggest concern," said Lussi.

"The complete water pipe system in Schuld needs to be thoroughly renewed. Its reparation will take years to be fully done," Lussi added and then started crying and added: "This flood has or will leave scars on the people of Schuld. And scars that can't be forgotten, that can't be overcome. Our life changed overnight."

The people started applauding, and Lussi apologised to all for crying, saying that the emotions had overwhelmed him.
