Hundreds of public school teachers marched the streets of Athens on Wednesday to demand better pay and working conditions as tensions grew between labour groups and the Greek government.
Footage shows protesters marching with banners and placards outside the Hellenic Parliament, chanting while lighting flares.
"We have taken to the streets during our 24-hour strike," a protester said. "Public schools are affected by mergers, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient staffing, under-funding and poor maintenance."
"Teachers are sending a thunderous message to the government that they are fighting for their dignity," added a second. "We demand substantial increases in our wages. We demand that measures be taken to support our pedagogical and educational work."
According to media reports, several labour groups are calling for the restoration of workers' rights that were affected during the 'successive international bailouts' between 2010 and 2018.
The measures served as a condition for rescue loans, and included severe cuts to public spending, tax increases, and labour reforms.
This follows a similar protest staged by dock workers on Wednesday and nationwide demonstrations by the health sector last week to denounce the government for 'prioritisation of profits' over the well-being of staff.
