Description

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said that Beijing hoped the new German government would continue Chancellor Angela Merkel's 'pragmatic and balanced' approach, at a press conference in the Chinese capital on Monday.

Hua said Beijing stood 'ready to work' with the new government, which has yet to be formed, on advancing "practical cooperation between the two countries in the spirit of mutual benefits and openness."

The spokesperson also praised Merkel, who remains in office in a caretaker role, for helping "to deepen and substantiate practical cooperation and friendly interactions in various areas with China," which she said had provided 'tangible benefits' to both countries.

Hua also touched on the return of Chinese businesswoman Meng Wanzhou, who spent almost three years under house arrest in Canada, which she called a "victory for the Chinese people and a victory for the forces of justice.”
