Elon Musk's SpaceX launched the four-person Polaris Dawn mission crew aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday with the aim of conducting the world's first-ever private spacewalk.
Footage shows the rocket blasting off and blazing across the sky towards the edge of the atmosphere.
The spacewalk is expected to last two hours and will broadcast live. The crew received more than two years of intense training ahead of the mission, skydiving, spending hundreds of hours in simulators and even performing tasks on top of a volcano in Ecuador.
American billionaire Jared Isaacman, who has a long-standing partnership with SpaceX, is funding part of the mission and has reportedly been appointed as the mission commander. The team also includes an engineer, an astronaut training instructor and a retired US Air Force pilot.
"The @PolarisProgram astronaut mission is headed for an altitude three times higher than the Space Station, the furthest that humans have been from Earth in over half a century!" wrote SpaceX founder Elon Musk on X, formerly Twitter.
In addition to the spacewalk, Polaris aims to conduct 36 scientific experiments on the effects of space and radiation on human health.
