Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reaffirmed his country's support and reiterated calls for a two-state solution for Palestine during an official meeting with president Mahmoud Abbas in Madrid on Thursday.

"Palestine exists and has every right to have its own state; a state that coexists alongside the state of Israel in peace and security, which is the only way to make progress towards a solution that will bring stability to the region and the world as a whole," Sanchez said.

He went on to say that Spain respected the July 19 advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice declaring the "illegality of the Israeli occupation of the occupied territories".

"The precautionary measures established by this same International Court of Justice must be complied with. These measures expressly call for a halt to Israel's military offensive and must therefore be respected by Israel," Sanchez stated.

Abbas thanked Sanchez for his support calling for a second peace conference to be held in the Spanish capital.

Earlier this month, Sanchez promised that Spain would "continue to put pressure" on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in all international bodies, in particular before the International Criminal Court (ICC), whose prosecutor in May requested arrest warrants against Netanyahu and his defence minister Yoav Gallant as well as Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

On Monday, Spanish King Felipe VI received the credentials of the first Palestinian ambassador to Spain, bringing about a symbolic manifestation of the recognition of the Palestinian state by Madrid.

As of June 2024, 146 out of 193 member states of the United Nations recognise Palestine as a sovereign state.

Palestine is not recognised by several countries including Australia, Japan, Canada, the United States but also the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy, among others.
