Former US President and Republican nominee for the 2024 US presidential election Donald Trump mocked his opponent Kamala Harris, accusing the Vice President of launching a 'coup' and warning that she would deliver 'crime, chaos, destruction and death' while speaking at a campaign rally in Detroit on Tuesday.

Footage shows Trump standing in front of a row of police cars and flanked by officers as he delivered his speech in Detroit, which has some of the highest crime rates in the US.

The Republic Party presidential hopeful responded to comments made in the leadup to the Democratic Party National Congress (DNC), which is currently taking place in Chicago.

"You see her now with a smile and she's gotten rid of the laugh over the last couple of days," said Trump. "They told her don't laugh, please. But I'll bet inside she was laughing last night when she saw the way Joe Biden left because that was a coup," he continued. "A vicious, violent overthrow of a president of the United States," Trump added.

He also accused Biden of lying about accusations that Trump defended neo-Nazis after the Charlottesville riots in 2017 repeated by the US president at the DNC.

"They lied about Charlottesville. They lied about inflation. The inflation has been absolutely horrible," said Trump. "I watched last night in amazement as they tried to pretend that everything was great. The crime was great. The border was great. There wasn't a problem at all. No inflation. No nothing," he added.

The Republican nominee stated that Harris 'will deliver crime, chaos, destruction and death' should she be elected for office in November, adding that 'we’re very close to World War III' and that 'the level of power, the level of weaponry that is in the world today is so bad'.

"We're here today to talk about how we are going to stop the 'Kamala crime wave' that is going at levels no one has ever seen before and she is, you know, the most radical left person ever even thought of for high office, certainly for the office of president," he explained.

The 59-year-old Harris replaced incumbent President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race this last month amid growing concerns over his mental and physical capabilities. This followed a slew of high-profile gaffes and a concerning outing against his Republican rival Donald Trump in the first and only presidential debate of the election so far.

Several media commentators, analysts - and opponents - accused insiders in the party of mounting a 'coup' against Biden. Before he quit the race, Biden’s team had repeatedly insisted he was the best person to beat Trump in the upcoming US presidential election, which is scheduled for November 5.
