Polish President Andrzej Duda and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed strong support for multilateralism during the UN General Assembly's Summit of the Future in New York City on Monday. Both leaders emphasised the significance of the international system, despite its challenges.

President Duda acknowledged that while the UN system has certain dysfunctions, there is no viable alternative. "Despite many reservations about the UN system, there is no better alternative to multilateralism," he stated. Referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Duda argued that Russia’s actions were a blatant violation of the UN Charter. "By attacking a sovereign state, Russia has relinquished its responsibility to uphold international law," he added.

Prime Minister Meloni likewise reiterated Italy's commitment to multilateralism, emphasising that the UN plays a crucial role in fostering global understanding. "The challenges we face—climate change, humanitarian crises, health emergencies, and conflicts like Russia's war on Ukraine—require us to act collectively," Meloni noted.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also speaking at the summit, called for reforms in global institutions to better address contemporary challenges. Modi highlighted India's willingness to share its digital public infrastructure, stating, "For India, one earth, one family, one future is not just a slogan but a commitment, reflected in our global initiatives."

The High-Level Week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, which began on September 23, features speeches from the Heads of State and Government from 193 member states, running until September 30. The assembly serves as a platform for addressing global issues through collective action.
