Johnson said that the government was following scientific guidance and that the events were being held in a 'very careful and controlled manner.'
"We have now built up a very considerable wall of immunity against the disease," said Johnson, before detailing the UK vaccination rates.
Merkel said that she saw the situation with 'great concern' and was 'worried and sceptical' about the number of fans, saying that Germany would still opt for fewer spectators at matches.
The comments follow a senior German government minister calling for the UK and UEFA to reduce the number of supporters allowed into Wembley for the remaining Euro matches, ahead of the Germany-England match on Tuesday.
The stadium was open at 50 percent capacity, with around 45,000 spectators present. For the semi-final and final, the number is scheduled to increase to 75 percent capacity.
