The blast came as a memorial service for the mother of the Spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid was being held in the mosque.

Sunday's attack is the first to target the capital Kabul since the deadly suicide bombing at Kabul airport in late august. ISIS-K were the perpetrators of that attack, which killed 183.
