Description

The Taliban Foreign Minister urged the US to show ‘heart’ considering the country's dire economic situation, speaking at a press conference in Kabul on Tuesday.

Amir Khan Mutaqqi thanked international donors for raising a total of $1.2 billion (€1.02 billion) as emergency help for the country.

It comes as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and as well the US Treasury suspended funding for the country quickly after the Taliban takeover.

“America is a big country, they need to have a big heart”, said Mutaqqi, adding that the US should appreciate their collaboration during the American withdrawal and evacuation efforts.

Mutaqqi continued saying that the new government wishes to have good diplomatic relationships with the global community.

Due to the lasting drought and the COVID-19 pandemic, people in Afghanistan have been suffering from food insecurity before the Taliban seized power.

The currently limited access to cash after the takeover will intensify these effects, according to the World Food Programme (WFP).
