Description

German politicians spoke out against possible US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline during a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday.

"The sanctions are not only directed again companies, but also against governments. It is an unlawful interference in the legal system in Europe and it is also a direct attack on German and European sovereignty," said Klaus Ernst, economic policy spokesperson of the Die Linke parliamentary group.

US senators recently submitted legislation in an attempt to stop Russia from being able to complete the project.

"We also believe that the arguments used by the US and their congress are objectively wrong: Germany is not facing a dangerous dependence upon Russia, and Germany is also not ignoring the issues with Ukraine. We, representing the German economy, have always stressed that Ukraine's energy security is also a valuable asset for us," said Michael Harms, the managing director of the German Eastern Business Association.

The US opposes the pipeline saying that it strengthens Russia's grip on Europe's energy market. Moscow accuses Washington of using sanctions to open the door to more US natural gas exports to the EU.
