A Pakistani representative of Children and Youth NGOs demanded urgent support to avoid the ongoing terrible consequences of climate change, "as I speak today, still much of my country remains underwater," he said.
The representative referred to the summit as 'the COP of implementation', and added: "We urge you to not just to listen to us, but to partner with us for delivering action".
In support of this year's slogan 'No climate justice without human rights' Tasneem Essop, Executive Director of Climate Action Network (CAM), used her turn to demand the release of the imprisoned Egyptian activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah, who was arrested for "spreading fake news" and jailed for five years.
"Climate activists and human rights defenders are increasingly being attacked across the world. As Alaa Abd el-Fattah, the Egyptian prisoner of conscience has escalated his ongoing hunger strike that started more than 200 days ago, on April 1. He has stopped drinking water today. His life is now in severe danger. We call for his immediate release, and the release of all prisoners of conscience", said Essop.
COP27 has gathered representatives from around 200 countries, including US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz amongst others, to discuss the fight against climate change. The conferences will run until November 18.
