Description

A delegation of European representatives and diplomats visited the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem on Tuesday, and met with Palestinian families threatened with Israeli eviction orders.

Diplomats were seen listening to Palestinian families' complaints and also hearing about the conditions the locals are living in.

The delegation included European Union’s envoy to Palestine, Sven Kohn von Burgsdorf, as well as diplomats from France, Sweden, Spain and Italy.

After the meeting, Burgsdorfy expressed his concern about the situation in which residents are living in, and described Israeli eviction risk as a “Damocles sword over their head."

Burgsdorf affirmed that in recent days the neighbourhood case has become global, as media’s attention was received worldwide.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Safadi, a member of the Commission in Jerusalem, expressed hope that the visit would help to push the Israeli court to change its decision.

Tensions have run high in recent days amid protests in East Jerusalem over possible evictions of Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in favour of Israeli settlers.

Clashes in the Al-Aqsa compound escalated on Monday into an exchange of airstrikes between Hamas and Israel.
