Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi stressed the importance of international assistance and coordination in the ongoing situation in Afghanistan ahead of the G20 summit in Rome on Tuesday.

"We don't want Afghanistan to return to the state of being some sort of hub for international terrorism. Regarding this, there was a big effort from all leaders. For many countries, this also means to coordinate actions against terrorism," the prime minister stated.

He continued, "more than 600,000 people have been displaced and more than a million migrants are lost right now. We're trying to give a bit of order and visibility to this migrant situation, or it would otherwise have no coordination."

Draghi also warned of impending economic collapse in Afghanistan, "The situation is bigger than the humanitarian problem though. Because to be sure that all this works, it's important that the economy doesn't completely collapse."

The G20 summit in Rome is scheduled to take place October 30-31.
