Description

At least nine people were killed and several were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on a Deir al-Balah marketplace in central Gaza on Tuesday, according to media reports citing healthcare workers. The death toll is expected to rise, with some of the injured reportedly in critical condition.

Footage shows a man carrying a child's body to the hospital complex and placing him down, before weeping over him. Critically injured victims can also be seen arriving at the hospital in vehicles, and wounded people sitting on the floor in the hospital awaiting treatment.

The targeted area was reported to be classified by the Israeli army as a 'civilian safe zone' despite its continued offensive on the enclave. Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the strike at the time of publication.

This comes after at least 12 people were also killed on Tuesday at the Mustafa Hafez school in Gaza City by another Israeli airstrike, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence.

Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adrai has since confirmed the attack on the school via Telegram, saying the air force had carried out a precision strike based on intelligence about a group of 'saboteurs' in a 'command and control complex that was established and hidden' inside the school.

Fighting in Gaza has been ongoing for over 10 months. On October 7, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 40,099 people had been killed and more than 92,609 injured at the time of publication.
