Members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Green party announced plans to appoint Germany's new chancellor in early December, as the first round of coalition talks kicked off in Berlin on Thursday.

SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil stated that the coalition contract between the three parties, nicknamed the 'Traffic Light Coalition', is due to be finalised in November.

Klingbeil went on to express hope that SPD leader Olaf Scholz would be appointed as Germany's new chancellor in 'Saint Nicholas Week', referring to the week of December 6.

Michael Kellner, Federal Managing Director for the Green Party, described the plans to form a coalition government as a 'complex endeavour' but expressed confidence that the ongoing talks would be successful.
