United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that 'civilians objects should not be weaponised', following mass explosions of pagers and other electronic devices across Lebanon, speaking at a press briefing in New York on Wednesday.
Asked about the use of 'civilian devices', he replied: "I think it's very important that there is an effective control of civilian objects, not to weaponise civilian objects."
He added that he believed the 'logic' behind the explosions was a 'preemptive strike before a major military operation'.
"What we are witnessing is a multiplication of conflicts and a sense of impunity," he continued. "Any country or any military entity, militias, whatever, feel that they can do whatever they want because nothing will happen to them.”
Tuesday saw mass pager detonations, while Wednesday saw a spate of hand-held radios and solar energy systems explode across Lebanon.
According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, 20 people were killed and 450 injured on Wednesday, while the previous day, 12 were confirmed dead and nearly 3,000 wounded.
Hezbollah attributed the explosions to Israel, while the country has not commented.
