Description

Branches of the Al-Qard al-Hassan Association, which Israel calls a 'Hezbollah-linked' financial institution, were hit by Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon on Sunday evening.

Footage shows several areas in the southern suburbs of Beirut hit by strikes, with flames ripping through the buildings. Civil aircraft was spotted flying over Beirut near Rafik Hariri Airport, which was still operating despite the attacks.

Israel reportedly gave a number of advance warnings and evacuation orders. The strikes were seen in Shiyah, Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajneh, Al-Kafa't, Al-Ghubiri, Al-Salam district and Shwayfat. The cities of Tyre and Nabatieh, and the villages of Shahabieh and Mashgharah in southern Lebanon were also attacked, as were two branches in Baalbek and Hermel in Bekaa, eastern Lebanon.

An Israeli military spokesperson claimed the association was used by the "Hezbollah terrorist organisation to finance its terrorist activities against the State of Israel." He stated that the army had decided to "begin attacking this infrastructure."

Al-Qard al-Hassan Association has 31 branches across Lebanon, and was founded in 1982. It has not commented at time of publication on the claims against it or the attacks.

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the organisation in 2007 and 2021 accusing it of "allowing Hezbollah to build its own support base and compromise the stability of the Lebanese state."

Israel has conducted a ground incursion into parts of southern Lebanon, as well as an ongoing campaign of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets over the past month. Lebanon's Ministry of Health stated that over 2,400 people have been killed at time of publication.

The current escalation between Israel and Hezbollah began last month with explosions of wireless communications devices used by Hezbollah, which killed dozens and injured thousands. The sides have exchanged cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza war.
