Description

Ukraine's state oil and gas company Naftogaz has submitted an application to the German regulator for participation in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline certification, the company's CEO Yuri Vitrenko said at a briefing on Monday.

"Naftogaz, as a national company leading the fight for Ukraine's energy security, has applied to participate in the certification process of the operator of Nord Stream 2," Vitrenko said.

According to the CEO, Naftogaz is an active participant in the European gas market and Kiev plans to prove the impossibility of certification of the Nord Stream 2, as its launch may have a negative impact on the economy of the country.

"Our main position is that the Nord Stream 2 cannot be certified because its complete conformity to European legislation is not provided," Vitrenko said. "We note that there are great risks for the security of Ukraine and for the security of the region," he added.

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 was completed on September, 10. The gas pipeline running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea will supply natural gas to the EU domestic market from Russia's largest gas fields in the world.
