Description

Activists continued to protest in Chisinau city centre on Tuesday, as they demanded the resignation of President Maia Sandu, as well as early elections.

Footage shows the tents and signs, first set up by the protesters on Sunday, as well as chants of 'we will not step back'. Police officers were seen watching the rally.

"We are tired of living this way. People don’t like the way she (Sandu) rules, and I understand them perfectly and completely agree with this. The way we live with this [ruling] regime, we have never lived this way," one protester said,

The activists accuse the government of persecuting opposition politicians, and are calling for action on rising food prices and sky-high energy bills.

"Some people not just worry about their welfare, but really [worry] about how to survive through this winter, because the gas prices increased dreadfully. So the middle class citizen can’t pay the utility bills, not to mention the increased food prices, increased prices for everything," another demonstrator said.

There is currently no official information on any arrests at the protest.

Thousands of people attended the start of the rally at the weekend. The organisers, supporters of the opposition Shor party, called the tents a 'City of Change' and said they’d only be removed when their conditions were met.

According to local media, more than 120 tents were set up in front of parliament and the presidential palace.

In May, mass anti-government rallies began in the country over soaring bills, record inflation and a cost of living crisis.
