The Columbus police department released body camera footage Wednesday of a police officer fatally shooting a 16-year-old Black girl while responding to a 911 call the day before.

The body camera of officer Nicholas Reardon recorded how he arrived at a reported altercation on Tuesday. Reardon is seen pulling out his weapon amid the unravelling commotion. A girl wearing a black T-shirt is seen raising an object toward a second person before Reardon fires. The girl shot and killed by Reardon was identified as 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant.

Bryant is seen lying on the ground as officers try to reanimate her, while Reardon appears to pick up a knife lying next to her.

Reardon is also heard on camera stating: "She had a knife. She just went at her."

Reardon was hired in December 2019 and is now off street duty ahead of an investigation.

Bryant’s killing is already the second high-profile deadly shooting of a teenager by US police in the last month. Footage released last week showed a police officer shooting and killing a 13-year-old boy named Adam Toledo in Chicago.
