The Tokyo Paralympics torch bearers led the opening ceremony on Tuesday night. The games will kick off after a one-year postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tokyo will be the world's first city to host the Paralympics twice, after staging the 1964 edition. This time, the games will be held under completely different conditions due to the coronavirus measures preventing spectators from attending.

A record 4,403 athletes representing 161 different countries will compete until September 5th. The Paralympic games will be made up of 539 medal events from 22 different sports. Taekwondo and badminton have been added as this editions new sports.
