Members of the Green Party were seen celebrating at their headquarters in Berlin on Sunday, as exit polls were released for the country's federal elextion.

The crowd applauded and hugged one another as a screen at the front of the room showed exit poll results from broadcaster ARD, which projected that the party could win up to 15 percent of the votes.

According to the Federal Statistical Office around 60.4 million Germans were eligible to cast a ballot in 2021 federal election, a decrease of 1.3 million on 2017. The newly-elected Bundestag has to convene no later than 30 days after the election, however coalition talks between the main parties to form the new Germany government might last for several months.

The Green Party's Annalena Baerbock currently sits at third place in the polls, behind The Social Democrat's Olaf Scholz and the Christian Democratic Union's Armin Laschet.
