A nine-day-long lockdown has been announced in Shanghai following an increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases.

According to municipal authorities, the initial phase will run from Monday to Friday morning and apply to the eastern part of the city where the financial center is. The second phase will cover the western part of the city, and run from Friday morning to the afternoon of the following Tuesday, April 5.

Footage filmed on Monday features closed shops and restaurants, as well as delivery drivers carrying orders.

Shanghai reportedly recorded 3,450 asymptomatic COVID cases on Sunday, accounting for nearly 70 per cent of the nationwide total, along with 50 symptomatic cases.
