Several protesters gathered in southern Los Angeles on Monday night, after a 29-year-old black man was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies.

Dozens of protesters surrounding the sheriff's office could be seen, as they chanted anti-police slogans including "No good cops in a racist system."

"We got to keep working and build the community, man. Empower your women. Empower the community. Get educated. Like you said, if you get educated, man, then you'll understand what the laws and the guidelines of God are, man," said one masked protester at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said on Twitter that the incident happened around 3:15 pm (22:15 GMT) near West 109th Place and Budlong Avenue when deputies attempted to stop a man riding his bike for a traffic violation.

"During the contact, a fight ensued between the suspect and deputies. The suspect produced a handgun and a deputy-involved hit shooting occurred," said the announcement.

According to the reports, the victim was identified by the family at the scene as 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee.
