Description

A large group of Christians held a Way of the Cross in sight of Notre Dame in Paris, as part of the Easter celebrations on Good Friday, led by the Archbishop of Paris Mgr Michel Aupetit.

The believers were seen clutching prayer beads and praying, with Notre Dame visible in the vicinity.

One believer, Jean, said, "it has passed, it is there, and it is something that will feed us, so we can grow, and to hope from a Christian point of view and from a human point of view."

Another believer, Elisabeth, added, "let's say, our cathedral has fallen, Jesus has fallen, now we must think of the resurrection."

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, although there are indications that it may be linked to restoration work that was underway at the cathedral.

French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to rebuild the 12th century cathedral within five years and an international fundraising campaign is underway to gather money for the repairs, with pledged donations from some of France's wealthiest families and largest companies already totalling over €850 ($955) million.
