EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said "Russia is drifting towards an authoritarian state" in a press conference following the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Monday.

Borrell said, "The ministers unanimously interpreted that Russia's recent actions and responses as a clear signal of not being interested in cooperation with the European Union."

EU diplomats also agreed to issue sanctions over Russia regarding the arrest and imprisonment of Russian opposition political figure Alexei Navalny.

"In response to the events around the situation of Alexei Navalny, we reached a political agreement to impose restrictive measures against those responsible for his arrest, sentencing and persecution," continued Borrell.

Conclusively, he emphasised that the council would support actors in the country engaging in ''political and civil freedoms."
