A brigade of women could be seen sweeping the streets in Mazar-i-Sharif on Thursday, as the Balkh municipality hired local women as street cleaners.
The move comes as the Taliban have banned female employment in many sectors, and aims to secure employment for women who need assistance, stated a spokesperson of the group, Maryam, adding "200 women are part of this process, it’s their ninth day of work, and after that, other women are employed. We call on the government to pay close attention and to help these people in need."
According to the mayor of Balkh talking to Afghan local media, the municipality was approached by the manager of the group after which the city hall agreed to hire the women.
Taliban have assumed control in Afghanistan as the United States officially concluded its 20-year deployment in the country on August 30.
