Description

Opposition protesters held an unauthorised rally in front of President Lukashenko's residence in Minsk, on Sunday, to protest the disputed presidential election results. The event was organised as a part of the "March of Peace and Independence" demonstration.

Footage shows people holding flags of the Republic of Belarus (1991-1995), wearing white and red clothes, taking selfies, waiting near the residence while riot police and internal military forces watched the crowd.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus, at least 140 people were detained during unauthorised protests. Earlier during the day thousands of people gathered near the Minsk City Hero Obelisk at Victors Avenue to express dissatisfaction with the results of presidential elections.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election that saw incumbent president Aleksander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term. On August 19 the European Union announced sanctions against "a substantial number of individuals responsible for violence, repression, and election fraud" in Belarus.
