Streets and homes were left flooded in the small Westphalian town of Hagen-Priorei on Thursday, after record rainfall caused havoc across western Germany.

Some cars, left on the side of the road, appeared damaged.

At least 42 people have been killed, with many more missing, after unprecedented rainfall caused multiple rivers to burst their banks, creating flash floods, in western Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate. Six people have also died due to the flooding in Belgium, while the Netherlands and Luxembourg have also been affected.
