Description

Israel's parliament the Knesset was evacuated mid-session shortly after air raid sirens rang over Jerusalem on Monday evening.

Footage from the Knesset shows a speech from the speaker of the Knesset Yariv Levin being interrupted by a general sense of fear and panic. Shortly after, he quickly announces the end of the session before evacuation.

The sirens sounded and parliament was evacuated after the militant group Hamas issued an ultimatum to Israel that police must vacate the Al Aqsa mosque and that all detainees must be released.

Earlier, near the al-Aqsa mosque, thirteen officers and some 300 protesters were reportedly wounded during the clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces.

The clashes occurred ahead of the planned Israeli celebrations of Jerusalem Day in the old city. The celebrations mark the anniversary of the Israeli state capturing parts of the city in 1967.

Authorities decided to stop Jews from entering the holy site on Jerusalem Day due to rising tensions in the capital.

The clashes also follow rising tensions fuelled by the possible eviction of Palestinian families from Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.
