The Seattle Police Department East Precinct's station on 12th Avenue and Pine Street was seen with its windows and doors boarded up with plywood, with banners hung on the building declaring it the property of the people.
Protesters reportedly want to turn the building, which now stands in part of an area labelled by protesters as the ‘Free Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone,’ into a community centre, as part of an initiative to defund the Seattle Police Department.
Anti-racism and police brutality protests have been taking place in Seattle, as well as other US cities, and around the world in recent weeks, in the wake of George Floyd's death during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25.
Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man died after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breath. Chauvin has since been fired, along with three other officers, and charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter.
