Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday apologised for authorities’ delayed rescue response in the city of Adiyaman the ‘most affected by the earthquakes and the destruction caused by the aftershocks’.

“Unfortunately we could not perform the kind of work we wanted in Adiyaman for the first few days. For this I ask for your forgiveness. We are aware of everything, no one should doubt that we have done and will do what is necessary,” he said.

Earlier Erdogan met with families displaced by the earthquake, now living in container camp deployed in the area right after the catastrophe.

At the time of publication, the total combined death toll of the devastating earthquake crossed 50,000. Turkey alone faced 44,218 deaths, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The quake also killed 5,914 in Syria.
