Description

Dozens of Berliners gathered along the Spree river to paint portraits of the outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday.

The event was part of an art workshop put on by Artnight to encourage participants to paint and discuss politics.

With both the German federal election and the end of the Merkel era approaching, the organisers chose to make the departing Chancellor as the focus of the workshop.

"Today the focus is on Angela Merkel, we wanted to create sort of a farewell to her since we have the elections coming up in a week, and she’s been in office for 16 years and we wanted to say goodbye creatively using some portraits," said Miles, Artnight's head of communications.

Miles went on to say that “the participants were really overwhelmed, by the experience itself, the art experience but also having general chats about politics at the table with her, really exchanging, also the idea of bringing people together, but also making sure that they know that the elections are coming up and how important it is to vote, and give people the platform to get creative but also if they choose to do so, to have a political discussion."

The 2021 German federal election is set to take place on September 26.
