"We're going to walk down and I'll be there with you. We are going to walk down anyone you want but I think right here we are going to walk down to the Capitol, and we are going to cheer on our brave Senators and Congressmen and women and we are probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them," Trump added.
Protesters later stormed the building, clashing violently with law enforcement before the national guard was mobilised.
The protest was taking place on the same day the US Congress was formally certifying the electoral college votes, confirming Joe Biden as the next President of the United States.
